SharePoint - Opening Links in a New Window

One of the questions that I get asked the most on SharePoint is how to open simple links from a link list in a new window.  Similar to'url').

As you probably have found out - there is no way to do this out-of-the-box with a Links List in SharePoint.

Here is an article on how to change ALL links in ALL link lists to open in a new window...

Andrew Connell posted a very nice solution on how to modify the Links List to let you to select whether or not you want to open the link in a new window.

My favorite quick solution is to use a Content Editor Web Part and JQuery.

SharePoint 2007

Open the page up in edit mode.  Add a new Content Editor Web Part and click edit, then select "Modify Shared Web Part".  Now on the right side of the screen, click the "Source Editor" button.

SharePoint 2010

Open the page up in edit mode.  Add a new Content Editor Web Part.  Put your cursor anywhere inside of Content Editor Web Part for editing.  Now look on the ribbon menu for the htlm option.  Click it and then:

Insert the following code into the dialog box to open all links in lists (not documents and announcements)

<script src="" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function() {
.attr("target", "_blank");

Now click on the "Appearance" plus sign to expand out the options.  Scroll down and under "Chrome Type" select "none" from the drop down box.  Click apply, and then OK.  You're finished.

You can also use the Summary Link Web Part. This gives you much more control over your links and how you want them opened. You can style them to look pretty much identical to the links list.
