There are no people or groups to show in this view...

One of the great out of the box web parts is the Site Users web part.  It allows you to dynamically display who has access to that site.  You can configure it to show one of the following:

  • Show people and groups with direct permissions on this site
  • Show people in this site's member group
  • Show people in the group: <Select a group>

I like to use the third option where I create a SharePoint security group (e.g. Site Team Owners) , give that group access to the team site, then show the membership so everyone can see the list of members.

Occasionally, with the model above, someone will complain about a "There are no people or groups to show in this view, or you do not have permissions to view the people or groups." error while viewing this web part.  This is most likely due to the fact that the viewer is not a member of the security group AND the group membership has not been made visible to everyone.  To resolve this, do the following:

  • Site Settings
  • People and Groups
  • Click you security group on the left side navigation
  • Settings --> Group Settings
  • Look for "Who can view the membership of this group's members"
  • Change it from 'Group Members' to 'Everyone'
